Driving through the well-manicured subdivision on the northeast edge of Midland, there is no hint of anything unusual about the 12 single-family homes that back up to U.S. 10.

The neat, unassuming homes, however, are part of a much larger five-year scientific experiment between Dow Building Solutions and Cobblestone Homes.

Tucked in the basement of each is equipment that collects information about energy use. Every 15 minutes, 60 points of data measuring temperature, humidity and moisture in the walls of the home are transmitted to the Dow Building Science Laboratory in Midland for analysis…
